One World Society launches "Transition St Andrews" Programme

Starting this week, the One World Society will begin its ‘Transition: St Andrews’ program. It is aimed at reducing St Andrews’ carbon footprint and creating a more eco-friendly campus.

The campaign was launched with an event in Venue 2 of the Student Union building on Monday December 7th, which featured speakers giving talks on sustainable development.

The One World Society has established some “ambitious, yet practical goals” in order to encourage environmental sustainability, such as working with Halls of Residence to reduce waste and promote recycling, increase the consumption of locally-grown food and products, as well as campaigning for the installation of solar panels on university buildings.

In an interview with The Saint, Georgina Rannard, Director of Student Representation, explained, “We are currently undertaking a semester reform survey online in order to figure out how to make the academic year both environmentally and financially viable for students. We will probably see some sort of change to the calendar over the next couple of years.”
