As part of plans to redevelop the University’s Main Library, some departmental libraries face possible closure. Currently under review are the Modern History, Classics and Philosophy libraries.
Jeremy Upton, the Acting Director of Library Services, felt any such change would be beneficial. He said there would be more efficient use of space, resources and funding, as well as the opportunity to continue the digitalisation of books, making hard copies less vital.
Georgina Rannard, Director of Student Representation, welcomed the plan, as it would allow for greater access of books at all times.
However, it is likely that some staff and students will be reluctant to accept the proposal, as departmental buildings would see their importance to the student population reduced. In addition, students appreciate the quiet and compact nature of the libraries.
The closures would most likely coincide with the completion of the Main Library redevelopment due for 2013, and would be subject to detailed discussions with the departments affected.
